Screen split and wrapped around

I've just made the jump from Ubuntu to LMDE, and seem to be in over my head. I'm on a HP Pavilion g6-2122he, and (among other difficulties), the screen is always split and wrapped around--the right-most sixth of the screen ends up over on the left, putting the battery icon exactly in the lower left corner. I found two other (older) threads on here reporting similar problems, neither with answers.

Here's what I know about my graphics controller:
<<
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 1841
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 43
Memory at c2000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable)
Memory at b0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable)
I/O ports at 4000
Expansion ROM at <unassigned> [disabled]
Capabilities: [90] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit-
Capabilities: [d0] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [a4] PCI Advanced Features
Kernel driver in use: i915

I was relatively new to Linux before I switched over (I liked what I was hearing about LMDE, and didn't want to get overly acclimated to Ubuntu if planning to leave it), so I'm quite ignorant. On the plus side, I follow instructions. It's getting to be a drag avoiding the right edge of the screen, so I'd very much appreciate any help that could be given.

This issue finally resolved itself when resuming from suspension. All I can hope is that it doesn't occur again, since I don't know what happened last time to make it stop.
