Elyssa -- No Sound

Postby JohnBlaz on Wed May 14, 2008 2:18 am

Elyssa 5.0
Sound card: SB Live! 5.1 (Driver ---> emu10k1??)
Pentium 4 3.0GHz
Intel Desktop Board D865PERL

Before I describe my problem, let me state that I am very new to linux. I tried out Ubuntu (Hardy) for a while and just switched over to Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa - BETA). My problem is that when I installed both OS' (ubuntu and mint), I had no sound at all.

I followed this guide to fix Ubuntu and got my sound working ->>> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449&highlight=sound+troubleshoot

I tried the same procedure with Mint and it did not work. I do now, however, get sound at the LOGIN screen. Also if I go to [Preferences]->[Sound], and set playback to ALSA, I can hear the test sound.

Does anyone have any input about what I can do?

Code: Select all
$ aplay -l

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

I tried the same procedure with Mint

Could you describe the procedure - that topic is one of the longest topics there are....
Also it's ICH5 so I don't have the solutions for ICH8 to use
You have a built in soundcard apart from the sblive - see to it that it's disabled in BIOS
Also check this
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=7966&hilit=ich5
or this
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=4304&hilit=ich5
Search for ICH5 in the forum and/or SB live

Thanks for the reply, I disabled the onboard sound in BIOS and that seemed to fix my problem. Here is what else i had done prior to my post.

Tried to load my driver with modprobe:
Code: Select all
sudo modprobe snd-emu10k1

I couldnt load my driver (emu10k1) with modprobe, so I compiled the ALSA drivers using alsa-source.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) module-assistant alsa-source

Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure alsa-source

Within alsa-source i de-selected everything except for "emu10k1" to install, saved and exited, then the following code:
Code: Select all
sudo module-assistant a-i   alsa-source

After this I noticed in alsamixer that the current card was NOT SBLive! but "intel8x0" (onboard device?) So i modified "/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base" and added two lines at the bottom of the file to make SBlive the default card. (is this correct?)
Code: Select all
options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options snd-intel8x0 index=1

I also modified one more file, "/etc/modules" and added the following so that the driver was loaded every session.
Code: Select all
snd-emu10k1

This worked in Ubuntu, without having to disable the onboard sound in BIOS.

Hi JohnBlaz,

I've got similar issues, during my bootup the PulseAudio daemon sometimes isn't loading properly.
Normally this will do
Code: Select all
pulseaudio -D

I have added an entry into the Session-Manager to assure PulseAudio is loaded.

I believe the indexing is correct
