This printer has worked well in the past with 32-bit Ubuntu, 64-bit Ubuntu, and Mint 11. I tried LMDE for a while, the printer worked, but the overall experience was a bit too weird so I'm back to Standard Mint.

Now running 64-bit 14, the Brother printer drivers from the Brother website install okay, the printer is located, and all looks fine. But print jobs vanish. The printer never budges.

I've tried setting up printer via its network connection, same result.

Windows XP's driver (in a Virtualbox machine) works perfectly via direct connection. So the issue isn't hardware, it's the Brother driver.

I've tried Generic (RAW, Post script, etc.) as well as other Brother models that are close. The best I get is the printer nudging itself awake. Still no printing.

Any ideas, my Mint friends?

Same problem here. I have MFC-990CW and MFC-J6510DW. Both work with W7 and my desktop with 32bit Mint 10.
They used to work with my laptop Mint 11 64 bit but with Mint 14 64bit the printers appear to install and test page says OK but nothing appears.
The scanner works fine in Mint 14
Could it be a CUPS issue? The CUPS troubleshooting is quick to blame the drivers.

I'm in the same boat with the MFC-6490CW printer. Just installed Mint 14 64 bit Cinnamon. Nice OS, but can't for the life of me get the printer to work. Says it's printing but nothing happening. To get the same printer to work in PCLinuxOS I had to install from the su/command line. Would appreciate any heads up. Running on a HP Compaq 515 lappy partion with Win7.

I should add that I have tried with both Mint 14 64bit Cinnamon and Mate with same result.

Same problem here with brother HL-2035, using Brother HL-2035 Foomatic/lj4dith. Also, can't open cups at http://localhost:631/. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Cheers

Okay, I got my printer to work. Here it goes.

Delete the brother printer.

Download the lpr and cups files (deb format) for the mfc6490-cw printer here < http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... d_prn.html >

The cups file was already installed on my machine from earlier attempts (you might have seen it or used it while trying a driver install via the GUI.

From the terminal as su (password required) type the following: mkdir var/spool/lpd
(you're making a folder/directory for the printing info to collect for transmission) (I'm doing a wireless connection) (check Brother website if you're doing usb, serial, etc.)

Then from the synaptics manager on your machine, search for and install ia32-libs (go get a cup of coffee, it takes a while)

Then repeat search for sane-utils (shorter install time)

Then repeat for psutils - didn't find it so I'm not sure if it is needed which goes for the sane-utils. We're talking about just printing not everything else; scan, fax, etc.

Then back to the terminal (still in su mode) and from the directory the cups and lpr files are at. For me it was downloads, so cd Downloads.

Type: dpkg -i --force-all mfc6490cwlpr-1.1.2-2.i386.deb

For the cups file if not installed, type: dpkg -i --force-all (cupswrapper-drivername)

I hope this gets it going for you. Please post back, or maybe wait for a Linux Guru to validate what I've posted here as the best way to proceed. I'm sure there's something that can be done in a better fashion. Good luck.

What killed me was that the driver debs seemed to install flawlessly through Mint, no i386 trickery involved. But you found and posted a solution that I used a while back and forgot about.

Alright bbbaldie! Great. I'm glad it worked for you too. I was told that I needed to go the ppd file route but that wasn't needed on PCLinuxOS so I figured it was something else. All this info is on the Brothers Solution website for those who need to tweak, etc. Now, I'm loving Linux Mint. Using Cairo Dock and it is beautiful...

The scanner works as root, not as a user, that's another can o' worms, but a lot easier to fix, I've done it through a few installs. But this whole printer-refuses-to-print was a new one, quite the tough nut to crack. Thanks to you, who epitomizes a helpful fellow Minter, this one is now solved.

You're welcome. I thought that was all that was needed to do printing. BBBaldie says the other functions are a can of worms but I usually do those from my Windows desktop or just the printer itself. It's nice to solve a computer problem, huh?

These instructions are pretty old now. I had no trouble installing the drivers using the installation file from the brother website.

Use this link and try Downloading and using the "Driver install tool". It will download and install the printer and scanner drivers. You should not need to download anything else.

You will need to know the IP address of the printer on your network. It pays to choose a fixed IP address on your printer. This can be set on the printer screen itself.

On the subject of ia32-libs open the MENU>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager

Put ia32-libs in the search box. If there is a green box beside the result then it is installed. Use the instructions above first though as the installer should install all packages needed.
