Ethernet and Dell 15z not working

Work has given me a nice new Dell 15z Inspiron and have installed Linux Mint for me. Unfortunately Ethernet doesn't work. Wifi does but i've got to copy a 20gb VM image to the drive. :-/

cat /proc/version
Linux version 3.5.0-17-generic (buildd@allspice) (gcc version 4.7.2 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.2-2ubuntu1) ) #28-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 9 19:31:23 UTC 2012

i saw on a previous thread a request to view interfaces so it might be useful here too:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

lspci | egrep -i --color 'network|ethernet'
07:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)
09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)

The laptop's Ethernet port works on Ubuntu apparently but not Linux Mint.. yet i guess.
I know a little of linux and loving it but nothing when it comes to ethernet drivers. As a stop gap I was wondering if it was worth buying a usb > ethernet lead? Presumably that would probably require a different ethernet driver and might even work?

Any help greatly appreciated.
