Mint 14 32 bit radeon 4000 series strangeness <solved>

Postby sketch chomsky on Tue Feb 12, 2013 3:14 pm

Hi. I am a total noob so bear with me.
I can get sound out of my laptop (Hp DV6) using lmms with jack but I can't get sound with anything else. through external or internal speakers.
I've tried mucking around with settings in sound preferences. Downloaded alsa mixer also.
I presume it's not a hardware problem as I CAN get sound but I really don't know where to go from here. I guess it's not a driver issue.
I just don't know and I don't know what to put in a terminal to access ANYthing. Feeling a little bit out of my depth. :)
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
Cheers in advance. Sketch.

For others to possibly suggest things to try, please share the output of the following command to tell us the basics of your system. Run it from the terminal; see its Edit menu for copying text.
Code: Select all
inxi -Fxz

You already tried some things, so this might make it more difficult for others to suggest an approach to you. Probably best to try and solve this either by first reinstalling or by booting the Linux Mint installation ISO and try and get sound working from there--that way you know for sure nothing you already did is not interfering.

Hi there.
That was a quick response. Here is what came out from that command;
inxi -fxz

Clock Speeds: 1: 1050.00 MHz 2: 1050.00 MHz

cmp_legacy svm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch osvw skinit hw_pstate lbrv svm_lock nrip_save

Don't know if that helps.

Cheers, Sketch.

I'll leave it up to you to spot the one difference between these two, and try again

How do I start to learn commands for the terminal and actually UNDERSTAND this stuff...?

Cheers, Sketch.

I'm logging off for today, but in reply to the above, check this excellent introduction to the command line: http://en.flossmanuals.net/command-line/

Hey!

Noob fixed the problem.

Turns out I hadn't tried all the permutations in sound preferences. Ended up with; Built in Audio then in Settings for selected device; analogue stereo output.

Feeling rather embarrassed now . Sorry for wasting your time.

Have started in on the command line book. Looking interesting.

Cheers. Sketch.

Don't know how to put solved by the post. :D

Edit the first post in your topic (see the edit button in top right of each post; but edit your first post), and add the word <SOLVED> to the subject. Glad you got it fixed, enjoy the newfound sound :D
