Graphics tablet suggestions

I would like suggestions from people who are using a graphics tablet with Mint 14/Cinnamon, GIMP and Inkscape. I have never used a graphics tablet before, and searching through the forum brigs up lots of questions about missing settings, plug-ins, and other configuration woes but no recommendations for setups that work reliably. I will use it mostly for occasional photo retouching for the web (especially free-hand selections) and simple line drawings for flyers and posters. What's the best compromise in terms of price, size, brand, etc for those purposes? My monitor is a flat screen 1920x1080 px.
