Why doesn't /dev/videox exist?

Postby Neuraleanus on Sat Feb 16, 2013 8:18 pm

I have installed a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1250 TV Tuner into my Linux Mint 13 (Maya) system. It appears that the card is being detected and the bttv, cx23885, and v4l2_common drivers are getting installed. dmesg indicates:

dmesg | grep -i Hauppauge
[ 6.323683] CORE cx23885[0]: subsystem: 0070:2259, board: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1255 [card=20,insmod option]
[ 6.470251] tveeprom 1-0050: Hauppauge model 22111, rev E2F5, serial# 8419441
[ 6.470264] cx23885[0]: hauppauge eeprom: model=22111

More:

dmesg | grep -i cx23885
[ 6.323344] cx23885 driver version 0.0.3 loaded
[ 6.323388] cx23885 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[ 6.323683] CORE cx23885[0]: subsystem: 0070:2259, board: Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1255 [card=20,insmod option]
[ 6.470264] cx23885[0]: hauppauge eeprom: model=22111

dmesg | grep -i DVB
[ 6.470257] tveeprom 1-0050: TV standards NTSC(M) ATSC/DVB Digital (eeprom 0x88)
[ 6.470266] cx23885_dvb_register() allocating 1 frontend(s)
[ 6.470271] cx23885[0]: cx23885 based dvb card

[ 6.753068] DVB: registering adapter 0 frontend 0 (Samsung S5H1411 QAM/8VSB Frontend)..

However, ls /dev fails to show the video devices. Shouldn't they be there? I do not presently have a video source to test the tuner card. I start up Kaffeine and under Television --> Configure Television --> Device 1, it says "Samsung S5H1411 QAM/ Frontend", so it looks like Kaffeine is seeing the TV tuner.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.
