Quest for Solutions for Legacy ATI Graphics Chipset

Postby ramk on Wed Feb 20, 2013 12:06 pm

Hi

Seems to me, from the last few days of irc'ing, googling and forum crawling and trawling that one of the big headaches is that older ATi Graphic chipsets are now not supported by the AMD / ATI catalyst drivers. This trouble is present in the newer versions of linuxmint (14 and 13) and also other later editions of ubuntu, fedora .

Solutions seem to vary for different Klinux OS's and different hardwares. The hardware seems to react differently to similar methods to resolve the problem.

the Mint irc channel seems (to me) to have quite a few people asking for help with old ati chipset problems on newer mint editions

My own trouble is posted here

Display Issues Vesa/Radeon fail, refresh rate is 0.0 hz http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=110&t=125880

Am wondering if people who have resolved their own issues can post their solutions here - which machine specs and how they resolved the issues. And maybe links to other solutions they may be useful to troubled members of the community.

One solution (or part thereof ) is posted separately below

As far as my own trouble goes it seems like I will revert to lm 13 and stay there for as long as possible

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Is there a need for the proprietary ones?
As have a dual display Ati 4350 card works out the box with the default open drivers no issues with desktop effects,games,etc..
Maybe a specific ati legacy version card? As you didn't state what ati card.

Just trying to educate myself for the need of proprietary drivers?

Good question - no there is no need for propreitory drivers, especially not when open source ones work

My problem is detailed here
viewtopic.php?f=110&t=125880

hardware is a t60 thinkpad with a ATi x1300 radeon graphics card.

Am running Lm 14 xfce / mate (now on mate ) and the refresh rate if at 0.0. have not installed any proprietory legacy drivers and the open source drivers don't seem to work.

The display screen is "not detected" and refuses to move from the 0.0 refresh rate.

Would be happy to hear more
