Regular screen freezes

I have used Linux Mint 13, Linux Mint 14, and Fedora on this system, and they all exihibited the same behavior.

Sometimes, my screen freezes - no input changes anything. I am not able to switch to another terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 (or any Fn key). If I have an external keyboard plugged in at that time, its lights will start blinking continuously.

The freeze happens at various moments. The most regular case is when I touch the keyboard while the system is in sleeping mode. But it happens also that it freezes while I am typing!

I looked into syslog, and it complained a lot about irqbalance, so I removed that package, and the error persists.

The system is a Gateway NV57HO6H. Note that it is very stable under Windows.

Flashing keyboard lights generally means a kernel panic. Try running a memtest overnight and see what you get.

Hello,

I did that. After 8+ hours, there were no errors detected. Any idea what other troubleshooting I can do?

Look at the system logs immediately after the crash and see if you can see anything there.

I have tried with the Linux kernel offered by Mint, as well as 3.6.3 and 3.8.0 from upstream's kernel PPA, and it keeps on happening.

In this latest freeze, the system had the lid closed and was on the power overnight. When opening the lid and plugging in the external keyboard, I noticed that the lights were blinking and the system would not resume from sleep.

Here is the information I am ble to get from the main log files.

Darn, I accidentally closed the page and lost my reply.
Anyway, since it's not consistent, it might be a hardware issue. I was looking for some pattern so we could pinpoint a specific error or kernel module.
Try running prime95 on Windows and see if it's stable. Keep an eye on your temperatures while doing this, as it's been known to burn up systems. Also, watch your temperatures in Linux. If it's ever over 80C, you need to clean out your heatsink.

That was a good hint. I added an applet at the bottom panel showing the temperature, and it was >70 C without doing anything much.

I have seen in another forum that, sometimes, the fan control could be improved with a BIOS update. I have done that, and saw that the temperatures are noticeably lower.

I reinstalled irqbalance and things went fine for a while.

But I had two crashes recently, after installing Cinnamon. The temperatures shown were <65C both cases I don't remember a crash in XFCE after this.

The log files are not giving any hints either. I am removing IRQBalance once again and see if that changes anything.
Is there anything else to monitor?

I had another crash today, with something possibly helpful in the log files.

In syslog (same thing in kern.log)

So it seems that the temperature is under control... what else???

I had a temporary freeze - lasted maybe 5 seconds

This is in .xsession-errors

If your CPU is throttling back due to temperature, you need to fix that issue first. That is never okay on any system. Try cleaning out the heatsink, and if that doesn't help, replace the thermal compound (both of these work best if you disassemble your laptop). I like Arctic Silver 5 since I got it free with a motherboard and I still have some left. There are better compounds out there, but you can use whatever decent stuff you can find. Arctic MX-2 is one to look for.
My laptop runs about 50C, idles at 40. It used to hit 65C. Different systems have different thermal designs, but they should never be over ~55C at idle. Lower temperatures are better, but are hard to get in a laptop.

And that temporary freeze isn't that big of a deal. It's just a misbehaving window/application. I occasionally get little blips like that in any system i use.

Check you peripheral components. Sometimes it is as easy as a bad USB plug or a cord. I recently finished up a memory and drive upgrade and upon reboot I was greeted with intermittent freezes, keyboard loss and no mouse. Software and hardware checks eventually led to a bad mouse connection which should have been one of my first checks but I over thought the problem. Good Luck
