For installing Linux: EXT4

For removable drives: fat32 or NTFS

Fat32: compatible with Linux, Windows, and Mac (has file size limitations)

Ntfs: supports very large files. Compatible only with Linux and windows. (NTFS is read only in Mac)

For cross-patform use (sharing data), some FAT file format is probably best: usually a later one such as FAT32

If it was for your own hard drive, you would use the format needed by your OS
--but I get the sense you want to share the data
    NTFS is another rerasonable choice
--since Linux supports that file format
  • Linux file formats (ext4, reiserfs (if still used) or any later ones such as XFS, JFS, are not so well supported by Windows or even Apple OSX
