ACPI problem, will not power down.

Postby benanderson on Fri May 23, 2008 9:03 pm

Hey there, I've just installed linux mint 4 GNome earlier today. It's a nice system, the only one I've had where I didn't have to edit everything to my liking. It runs well on this old beast too (P3 667MHz, 387MB of RAM. May 2000 According to the bios).
Although when I try to hibernate or shut down the machine it wont power off once it finishes whatever it does when it shuts down or hibernates. It just stops on a black and white dos-like with the shut-down reports or whatever they are running down the screen ending with a power down at the bottom, but nothing happens after that. I have to hold the button to turn off the machine. It restarts, boots and wakes from hibernate perfectly.

I don't know what's wrong. When I had PCLinuxOS installed it shut-down fine. When I had windowsXP installed I had to enable the legacy ACPI mode for it to shut down. Is their a legacy mode I can use? Or a legacy driver I can download?

Although I have used linux before it's only as a general purpose desktop machine so I don't know alot about it, I know enough to get by. If you could explain things clearly I'd appreciate it. Thanks :)
~BenA.

Edit: I've taken a photo of the shut down screen with my phone and I've uploaded it just in case anything important is on it.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Perhaps you find the solution here
http://www.linuxmint.com/wiki/index.php ... d_problems
Read down to "When you install" to see how do do it in an installed system.
Of course you don't do it from the live CD

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

I used the "apm power_off=1" thing at the bottom of the post. It works flawlessly now. Thanks for pointing that out :)
