Re install Gallium Driver for ATI Cards in Mint 14

Postby BrendenD15 on Mon Mar 11, 2013 7:46 am

I'm hoping someone can help me repair my Gallium graphics driver for an ATI Radeon 3200 series card on Mint 14. Currently, I cannot run any program that uses OpenGL such as Minecraft or SketchUp 8. My problems started when I wanted to try the official AMD driver to get better framerates in my games and apps. I installed the driver successfully, but it disabled Cinnamon and forced me to use GNOME. So I uninstalled the driver, but none of my OpenGL apps work now. I have read that the probable cause was that the AMD driver removed those features from Gallium and replaced them with its own. So now I need to fix it. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks. :D

My setup is:
Machine: HP Pavilion dv7-1448dx laptop
CPU: AMD Turion X2 64 2.20GHz Dual-core
GPU: ATI Radeon 3200 Graphics
RAM: 6GB
HDD: 320GB
OS: Mint 14 & Windows 8 dual boot

There you go:

http://www.unixmen.com/ubuntu-12-10-and ... em-solved/

Ati Radeon 2000 3000 and 4000 series are supported in 12.6 Catalyst driver and Xorg is need to be downgraded.

You have everything on that link.
I used recommended repository and my Readeon 3400 now works great on Mint 14.:-)

On Mint 13 you can normaly install ATI driver from website, version 12.6.
On Mint 14 is problem because Xorg is version 1.13, an Ati drivers 12.6 doen't support Xorg 1.13.

Thanks. I'll try that. I was probably trying to use a version of catalyst too high for my card. I think I downloaded 13.1.

snake2903, I downloaded and installed Catalyst 12.6 and it puts me in GNOME without hardware 3D support. I might try 13.1 again and build the Ubuntu/quantal package since it should have Xorg 1.13. That'll be a job for tomorrow, though. :|

I checked AMD's website for the 13.1 driver and it said that it does not support Xorg 1.13. However, the 13.2 BETA driver does but Radeon 4000 and under aren't supported. So now I'll probably just reinstall Mint since I've already backed it up.

I wasn't able to fix the graphics driver, but I did reinstall Mint. Everything works now and I even have more space and a little extra speed. I guess this was just AMD's way of saying we should use GPUs that aren't 5 years old.

Thanks everyone for your help. :D
