canon scanner

Postby ececec on Fri Mar 08, 2013 11:00 am

Hello,

Newbie question setting up a Canon imageclass mf4570dn printer and scanner. I have set up the canon drivers and printing works fine.

However, I can not get the scanner to work. I installed un-released sane version per the instructions in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1427330

but when I get to the terminal comman scanimage -L - the scanner is not recognized. Actually, it can't connect to a gnome key ring, then the scanner is not recognized. If I use sudo scanimage -L the output is just that no scanner is found.

Has anyone any ideas?

Thank you

Eric

I see some Internet searches indicating printer support only for Linux, however it is TWAIN compatible scanner, so some command line options may help

Sane development...

--command line for sanbe, some may help at least to identify the problem with the scanner function (usb, network connection ?)

@ DrHu: TWAIN is a Windows driver technology, not a scanning protocol. The "TWAIN SANE" interface you mention is for scanning over the network with a Windows and a Linux computer, not for simply scanning from Linux. This scanner is supposed to be working with sane. Are you using it over USB, or network?

@albertp

I am using it of a USB. It seems to work for other users of mint and Ubuntu per that post t I still can't get it recognized. Is there a terminal command I could post the output of here?

This command lists USB devices:
Code: Select all
lsusb

Please run it when the scanner is turned on - if it's off then it might not show the device.

lsusb does recognize the printer/scanner all in one as "Canon, Inc"

I can print from the same printer/scanner but not scan.

Many thanks

Could you post that line about Canon (or the whole output)? I would like to see the ID of the device too.

Ok, I think I misread your first post and mistook "MF4570dn" for MF4270 or MF4370dn, both of which are supported. The MF4570dn is not listed as supported by Sane (http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html).
Canon doesn't provide a Linux scanning driver on their website, only printing (http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/ ... ndSoftware). I guess you're out of luck.
