Sound dissapears on reboot

Sometimes when I boot into mint I have no sound. Then I go into the sound preferences and the device is set to riptide instead of VIA 8235. So I have to change that back turn the volume all the way up and reboot. This seems to only happen when I turn off the computer with the sound turned down a little. Is there some way to fix this?
