Hi,

There's a general how-to list of checks one can perform on sound problems at the ubuntu forum. If you do a search, look for 'comprehensive sound problem solution guide'.
Athlon 64 FX-57, Asus A8N-E, nForce4 chipset, video card NX8500GT GeForce, sound card bGears b-Enspirer w/ audio contlr: CMI8788 [Oxygen], 4G RAM, Sata WD hd 160G + 320G. Boot XP Pro nLite and a few other Linux distros.

The possibility should be related to PulseAudio which could not start-up automatically. What I realy do is recompile alsa driver by typing:

sudo apt-get install module-assistant
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i alsa

then uninstall Pulseaudio using apt-get. You can get sound back after reboot.
