Hi,

A few weeks ago I built a new system and finally got to install LINUX Mint KDE CE daryna on it. The only problem I had was my new high-end audio card wasn't working. The disc that comes with bgears b-Enspirer "Oxygen" CMI 8788 says it contains LINUX drivers. Well, I found out they are useless. So, then I started looking into getting the driver from ALSA specifically for this card, and the 'read me' and 'install' how-to were not specific enough for this newbie, and I ended up installing many packages and many dependencies with many config error outputs, to manually install the driver. After several days I gave up.

I then found an alternative at the ubuntu forum, written for the gnome desktop on how to install OSS (Open Sound System):

and it was much easier to do, the instructions are simple, and I now have wonderful sound in Amarok and Kaffeine.

No sound system is perfect with all applications, especially if you have a card with all types of new features on it, but OSS is working great with this card and I am very pleased.

Now, I just need to implore the fine folks at KDE to start looking more seriuosly at OSS to implement it into their system a bit more easily.

Right you are - but OSS is considered outdated and ALSA the way to go - but OSS is still constantly developed by 4Front

A quick check reveals that OSS has Xfi drivers now - nice to know as a lot of people ask for xfi support

Husse, why didn't you tell me that Elyssa has my sound card!!!

I just installed LINUX Mint Elyssa Rev. 1 and wow, my sound card works with ALSA and ARTS. I don't have to configure either way. Thanks for the hard work!

I should add that sound was great with OSS, but you have to renew the license every 4 or 6 months if you want to use it for free.

Now, I just have to get hubby to send me Mint KDE's latest version (Elyssa? I assume?) so I can have my k9copy back.
