help istalling webcam

Postby gillmaharik on Wed Jul 09, 2008 1:09 pm

I've got a new webcam and i can't get it to work under Mint (Elyssa). The manufacturer is "Silverline" and the Model is I CAM 830. It came with an installation disk that had drivers for Windows XP and for Linux. Under XP it works fine.Under Mint, nothing works - the LED doesn't light, Skype doesn't recognise it, etc. The readme file for the linux drivers says that it's a "SN9C201 Linux Driver Ver0.4" and that "This driver is compiled under Fedora Core 4.", so I don't know weather or not I can or should install them. I tried to install the SN9Cxxx drivers from http://www.linux-projects.org, and I get the error message: "Dependency is not satisfiable: linux-image-generic". According to my synaptic I have linux-image-generic version 2.6.24.16.18 installed.
Any help, please?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

It's not released for Hardy = Elyssa
There is a kernel problem obviously
Other resources are the opensource SN9C1XX and the obsolete GSPCA but that does not look promising

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

Have you tried Cheese? Cheese is the only software that sees my webcam.

See if this page gives you any answers. He maintains a large selection of the drivers for misc. cameras.

Thanks to all those who tried to help.Unfortunately none of the drivers worked. I changed my webcam at the shop for the Trust WB-6250X, and it works out-of-the-box with Mint.
Now Cheese doesn't work, but I'll let it go for the meantime
