WLAN connection with USB adapter terribly slow

Postby derlinzer on Wed Aug 13, 2008 5:26 am

I'm using Elyssa (and Hardy) and the following setup:

# FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7140
# Netgear WG111 V2
# Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware configured as a wireless bridge

# Internet connection: 10 Mbit down / 1 Mbit up

The WG111 V2 connects flawlessly after installation of ndiswrapper. However the internet connection is terribly slow in general and inconsistent, but the connection to the FRITZ!Box is never lost. With "inconsisten" i mean, that it starts out pretty fast - though nowhere near the possible speeds - and then drops down to low speed or no download at all.

When i switch to use the wired connection, which is the WRT54GL working as a wireless bridge, the connection is as fast and consistent as it should be - using nearly the limits of my internet connection.

I tested with WPA / WPA2, auto- and manual configuration, network manager and wicd. No matter what chose, download speeds didn't increase.

So, what's going wrong with the WG111 V2? Both are wirelessly connected to the FRITZ!Box but behave completely different. This happens in Elyssa and Hardy. Any clues?

I don't get it - is it wired or wireless? And you also say "Both are wirelessly connected"

Husse, sorry for being not quite clear about the setup:

1x PC
1x Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware configured as a wireless bridge hooked up per ethernet cable
1x Netgear WG111 V2 hooked up per USB
1x FRITZ!Box Fon WLAN 7140 hooked up to the DSL connection

I normally use the WRT54GL as a wireless bridge for my Xbox 360 and online gaming, but used it on the PC to test the speed compared to the Netgear WG111. Under normal circumstances i only use the latter on my PC.
