Problem with Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E installation.

Postby RED_ANYA on Fri Feb 07, 2014 9:43 pm

HI,
I have Linux Mint 16 64 bit installed, everything worked perfect till yesterday, when I decided to improve my internet speed and run BleachBit. Everything worked fine till I restarted my PC. I can't connect via Ethernet, but can using Wifi. When I run
Code: Select all
inxi -N
, the out put is :
Code: Select all
Network:   Card-1: Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller
           Card-2: Ralink RT5390 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe driver: rt2800pci

so it looks that I've uninstalled the driver. I tried to install it again following other threads in this topic , but with no success.
When I try install new driver I get errors:
Code: Select all
Check old driver and unload it.
Build the module and install

You do know that generally, when needing help on a topic like this, you are to use informative titles - this one isn't very informative.

Excerpt from Forum Guidelines:
Use a title that is specific. Do not use titles such as, "HELP ME!!!" or "linuxmint fails". Instead, make titles that define the problem in a clear and concise manner such as, "Kernel Panic: Wifi Intel 3945AGN". A clear title will attract more views to the topic.

Ok, so Bleachbit on your end uninstalled your Ethernet driver. Was your ethernet already supported by the kernel, or did you have to install it on your own?

While thinking about that, I found a page on the Realtek website that appears to have the driver that you're looking for.
http://www.realtek.com.tw/Downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=7&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

Hope this helps~

Sorry, I already updated the title, i hope it would more informative now.
I manged to install the driver following this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2182609 and I actually downloaded the driver from the website you recommended ,thanks :)
but still can't connect to the internet, even though the driver is installed now, as you can see below:
Code: Select all
Network:   Card-1: Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller driver: r8101
                            Card-2: Ralink RT5390 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe driver: rt2800pci

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is something I don't understand. When I disconnected PC from power source for about a minute and then turn it on , wired connection was back again, but after restart it was gone AGAIN and also while booting up there was following error message:
Code: Select all
...[   15.666777] systemd-udevd[365]:
Error calling EVIOCSDKEYCODE:   Invalid argument

Wow, Bleachbit must have really rotten the Mint here... :?

Can you remember what options you had set for Bleachbit to clean before losing your Ethernet? That would probably give more information to possibly go deeper into this issue...

I wish I had more I could use to help you with, but the only ideas I have left are for you to either try reinstalling the driver, or reinstalling Mint. Not selecting the potential option in Bleachbit which potentially caused this issue could help...

I don't know what else to say from here...

I also found an eHow website explaining how to enable or disable your Ethernet card, if you want to try...
