Asus USB- AC56 Wireless Adptr - Realtek 8812 Driver <SOLVED>

Post by DEcosse »

Hello - newbie here - quite a rookie with Linux in general but after initially trying cinnamon over Ubuntu, I like the way it 'feels' and installed complete Mint 16 Petra package.
I'm doing my 'learning' on a notebook, in advance of building an HTPC and plan to use this platform.

Much of Mint is very intuitive - great job!
But as said still very much a rookie when working in the Terminal
This question relates to loading Proprietary driver package, in this case for an Asus AC56 USB Wireless Adapter (which I believe is Realtek based - apparently 8812au driver)

I downloaded the Asus proprietary driver package for Linux from here but not clear on how to actually install this.
I thought somehow could use the Driver Manager but that content is just blank
So expect to load this via the terminal - but what commands do I need?

Appreciate your patience and support! :)

Additional info:
After some searching I found this
http://www.linux-hardware-guide.com/201 ... nd-usb-3-0

Apparently uses same chipset as the Asus adapter;

So that guide suggests to use either the proprietary edimax driver or the open source item also linked.
cd Downloads/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux-master
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8812au
where rtl8812AU_8812AU is the open-source driver package.

Using the script per that link with the open source one listed I could get the device to connect - however is extremely slow when compared to the internal one
So would prefer to use either of the proprietary ones:
(I would believe I could use either the Edmax or Asus packages which are presumably same however I would prefer the Asus one clearly in case of any other nuances).
But neither of those packages responds to 'make' - what do I have to do to use these?
My appreciation again of any assistance

Re: Asus AC56 Wireless Adapter Driver Install

Post by DEcosse »

OK - worked out the issue with the Asus download driver:
after unzipping I had a folder that I had presumed to be an install package - but could not figure out how to load it;
it would not configure or make
Then I found that the unzipped folder actually contained another zip file which required to be unpacked
So after unpacking the second zip made more sense
Now - there was an install.sh file in there which should have been straight forward with a ./install.sh;
however that was a disaster.
It went through a long process in Terminal and eventually just stopped:
after, not only was it not recognizing the new adapter, it completely corrupted my file system.
Even opening the 'home' folder it was just completely blank & would lock
Ultimately I ended up completely re-installing Mint

Take II:

So I went back to the Realtek package and install I indicated in the original post from the rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux-master package:
The Good news - that install completes and sees the USB adapter and allows it to connect to my router;
The Bad news - compared to the internal adapter the measured download speed (using a browser speedtest) is only about 7Mbps* vs 40Mbps
(* and actually much lower - found extremely sensitive to physical position)

Now - I found that if I am in direct line of sight of the router, the speed comes up to normal - so somehow it appears there is potentially less power to the device, which is affecting its range? The same device in the same physical location running under windows is flawless.
1) AC56 vs internal adapter performs much slower when both at same physical location removed from direct line of sight of router
2) In the same physical location, the AC56 performs much worse under Linux than Windows

=> Perhaps less power to the device in Linux which is affecting its range?

So - where do I go from here?

Could really use some help here!

It seems like the latest driver listed on the Asus site might address the issue I'm seeing with the limited range with the open-source driver
Update MAC/BB/RF parameters and mechanism to improve overall performance.
But I simply CANNOT get this driver loaded.

I've tried using the install.sh file (making it executable and then executing it) and also making/installing just the driver folder itself - no joy with either method.

The install.sh file is now completing without causing the corruption problems I had originally:
Below is the conclusion at the end of the install.sh execution script and lsmod shows the 8812au driver (first line after lsmod)

however when I plug in the adapter it is not activated

Re: Asus AC56 Wireless Adapter Driver Install

Post by chili555 »

After re-starting I don't initially see 8812au listed when I request lsmod;
but if I plug in the the adapter, then I do.
The module won't load unless the device is inserted unless it is explicitly called in /etc/modules. The behavior you describe is as normally expected.

Now that ath9k is, I presume, blacklisted, with the USB inserted, does it appear here?

Code: Select all

iwconfig
Does it scan?

Code: Select all

sudo iwlist wlan1 scan
If the interface created for the USB is not wlan1, substitute here.

Generally, if it scans, it will connect.

Are there any interesting clues here?

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep 8812

Thank you for kind reply!

I disabled the ath9k with modprobe -r - should I blacklist or is that sufficient?

Neither iwconfig or iwlist will repond in terminal once the USB is inserted - just sits with blinking cursor.
Only escape from that is to close the Terminal

(for following the ath9k is still enable so I could post)

You most certainly need to blacklist it:

Code: Select all

sudo -i
echo "blacklist ath9k"  >>  /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
exit
Reboot and show us:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -e rtl -e 8812
iwconfig

May I please have a link to the file you compiled? I'd like to examine and build it myself.

That's an unhappy driver you have there!

It's the first one in the Linux group - v4.2.5

I compiled/installed it using their 'install.sh' file;
however I also tried compiling it from the driver folder

It compiles for me on a 3.11-xx kernel, albeit with a few warnings. It is not unusual for a compiled driver to throw a warning or even a few and yet to work satisfactorily. Of course, in this case, it is not working satisfactorily and we don't know if one of the warnings was significant.

I would love to see your dmesg after a clean boot with the USB inserted and any ethernet detached. Reboot and run:

Code: Select all

dmesg > wifi.txt
Find the file wifi.txt in your user directory and post it here and give us the link in your reply: http://pastebin.com/

Thank you for your efforts.

With the ath9k still active, I plugged in the USB adapter and first obtained a report in that condition

http://pastebin.com/MMdWiZsR

Then, I blacklisted the ath9k (I actually had to reboot first in order to do this - the Terminal will not accept some commands with the USB plugged in; nor will the file system open properly);
After blacklisting, I then re-installed the USB and reboot
(note - the system will not fully shut down after the USB has been inserted - it just hangs - so powered off, so could re-start)

Then obtained the report you actually requested, with the USB installed (prior to shutdown/restart) and with the ath9k previously blacklisted

http://pastebin.com/XqZAySSC

Not to get too far ahead of myself, but should I remove the current driver build (from the install.sh process) and then re-compile manually as you have done?
If you can confirm for me the first steps to remove the driver and then to recompile/reinstall.

From the notes here - https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au

The author made modifications to get the 4.2.2 to run on kernel >= 3.10
The current rtl8812au version (per nov. 20th 2013) doesn't compile on Linux kernels >= 3.10 due to a change in the proc entry API, specifically the deprecation of the create_proc_entry() and create_proc_read_entry() functions in favor of the new proc_create() function.
I can confirm that the 4.2.2 revision from this source indeed made the adapter operational - just with the observed issues re the operating range (which is what I hope to see corrected in the 4.2.5)
I'm fairly sure I had tried the 4.2.2 as-is from the Asus download, and it did not work (similar to the 4.2.5)

The 4.2.5 release overview says it was to support 2.6.18 ~ 3.10: I wonder if has the same issue? The Mint 16 has 3.11 kernel
Is it possible to make the same changes 4.2.5 to accommodate the observation above?

I'm also willing to install an earlier kernel version (whether Ubuntu or Mint) to see if the driver as-is loads/operates successfully.

The author made modifications to get the 4.2.2 to run on kernel >= 3.10
Why not just build his version? With a temporary wired ethernet connection:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install git
git clone https://github.com/gnab/rtl8812au.git
cd rtl8812au
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe -r rtl8812au
sudo modprobe 8812au
At this point, you have two possibly competing drivers installed. When you tell us if it's working with 8812au, we'll blacklist rtl8812au.

See the second post - I did successfully install his version,(based on 4.2.2) but the performance is not effective unless it is within close proximity to the router.
It is not practical from where it will be operating under my final installation location.

I wanted to try the 4.2.5 to see if addressed in this release:
per the notes
Update MAC/BB/RF parameters and mechanism to improve overall performance.
I've posted comment on the github page to see if he can make the change with the 4.2.5 revision

I downloaded the linux mint 15 and made bootable usb stick.

Without installing the OS, just running off the stick in demo, I was able to successfully install the 4.2.5 driver off the Asus kit.

and it works! No need to blacklist the internal adapter either, just turn it off from the network manager.

Most importantly, as I suspected, the performance is indeed MUCH improved with the 4.2.5 driver
Close to the router, it has 48 Mbps (55 peak);
In another room through several walls has 39 Mbps (44 peak)

I should test it with a large file transfer between different systems in my network and see how that is, eliminating the internet variable.
But for a quick test, it shows good results.

The conclusions:
the 4.2.5 driver definitely gives better performance than the 4.2.2
the 4.2.5 driver will NOT run on 3.11 kernel

I've asked gnab at github to see if he might modify 4.2.5 to accommodate 3.11

incidentally here is the dmesg text file from the working 3.08 kernel mint 15 - http://pastebin.com/eKimfF49

Glad you have it working. Are you going to go ahead and install Mint 15?

I strongly recommend you blacklist ath9k. This begs the question of whether you fully tweaked all available settings in ath9k to make it work as expected. Have I opened Pandora's Box?

The new hardware will not have a competing wlan at all (Intel Haswell NUC) - has no embedded adapter. So that will be non-issue in the final configuration.
But if there is no solution for 4.2.5 in 3.11 kernel (Mint 16) when it shows up next week, will go with 15 for now.

Thanks for the general guidance and the time expended chili555.

Glad it's solved...sort of.

PS - I love my NUC. However, I am connected through ethernet.

Resolved!!

Now - COMPLETELY RESOLVED - With some fantastic support from abperiasamy to see what the conflict was (in 3.11 kernel), we now have a loadable working 4.2.5 driver with the improved range for Mint16!

I'm happy to say that the instructions posted by chili555 for installing via git works perfectly in Mint 17.1.

It appears ASUS still hasn't fixed their provided driver that comes on the disc. Installing from git had me up and running in minutes.
