Is the system completely unresponsive or is just the screen blank? If the former is true you have to fix that first by trying some tweaks. In case the latter is true you could try a few workarounds. Eitherway you have to find out which one is true first because the possible solutions are rather different... And there's usually no single solution for all possible configurations.. I've been tinkering with this for many many months..
PS: To avoid a possible confusion: You can figure out which one is true by pressing NumLock or CapsLock after resuming and checking if the keyboard LED's react accordingly or even better switching to TTY1 (ctlr+alt+f1), logging in (username+enter+password+enter) and rebooting blindly (sudo restart+enter+password+enter)
