Printer set-up problem

Postby T J Tulley on Sun Aug 31, 2008 3:06 pm

This is one of a number of problems which I am experiencing in my new installation of Elyssa - several times previously I have set up my Epson Stylus-Photo 915 printer with no difficulty.

This time it is not accepted - the range of connections offered does not include USB and although the driver for this model is found, it doesn't work.

I have just switched the printer on, and the event is shown in the following extract from /var/syslog:

Aug 31 19:38:15 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6207.045991] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
Aug 31 19:38:15 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6207.169954] usb 3-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Aug 31 19:38:15 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6207.393883] usb 3-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Aug 31 19:38:15 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6207.609851] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
Aug 31 19:38:15 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6207.729826] usb 3-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Aug 31 19:38:16 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6207.953748] usb 3-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Aug 31 19:38:16 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6208.169697] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
Aug 31 19:38:16 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6208.577579] usb 3-2: device not accepting address 4, error -71
Aug 31 19:38:16 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6208.689561] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
Aug 31 19:38:17 TJT4Elyssa3 kernel: [ 6209.097445] usb 3-2: device not accepting address 5, error -71

The address (URL) set automatically in 'Printer configuration - local host' screen (from MintMenu) is:
socket://:9100

I have just tried entering usb 3-2 (as suggested by syslog) but I see a box reporting:
"CUPS server error.

There was an error during the CUPS operation: 'client-error-not-possible' ".
This has appeared many times during this procedure.

What URL should I enter for the printer? and where can I find what is error -71 (and error-numbers generally}?
I shall be most grateful for advice.
Yours hopefully -

Theo Tulley.
