Brand new to Linux-wireless card question

I am brand spankin' new to using Linux, a friend of mine gave me a copy of Linux Mint 5 KDE. I just built a computer, and formatted the whole hard drive when I installed. Everything else works, but I can't get the wireless card to detect my router. All of these new programs are Greek to me, so I'm asking for some help in decoding this new OS. I am told that the freedom from M$ is worth it....

Well, what kind of wireless card do you have? Also, there should be an application called mintWifi, which works wonders (even my Broadcom works great).

Wireless card - GIGABYTE gn-wp01gs. I can't find mintwifi, all I can find is KWifi Manager, and I get a box that tells me to search for network. I click, and it immediately says "no network detected". Which is poop, because my wife's MS system has a wireless card detecting the same router no prob. I am really looking forward to learning more about this OS, but this wireless mess is quite frustrating.....
