Used to work fine, now after some updates were applied I get this.
An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'): Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is using the device and you have read/write access to the device.

I am having the same problem with my HP Photosmart M407 digital camera. Works with Simply Mepis (also based on Ubuntu). Any ideas?

Yes, I had the same trouble, here is the answer:
there is a problem with libgphoto2-2 and libgphoto2-port0 and if you revert them back to 2.2.1-ubuntu4 from 2.3.0-ubuntu3-edgy2 it will work beautifully. Also, if you go to your repository lists and remove the 'backports' from your list it will upgrade those (well, downgrade) to the 2.2.1's that work. It was a problem with the last update they did. Hope that helps.

I stopped it by removing the backports repository in Synaptic. I don't know if I'm going to miss some great patches or not, but... it doesn't try to break my camera on me.

The fix as listed worked for me!

Open /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules in your favorite text editor
Replace
BUS!="usb*", GOTO="libgphoto2_rules_end"
with
SUBSYSTEM!="usb_device", GOTO="libgphoto2_rules_end"

Save the file and your camera should work now!

You can use Synaptic and force single packages to stay on a certain version.

BUT i can not save the file?? (just 1 week working with linuxmint and starter sorry if it is simple???

I was happy to find a answer for this problem and finally i found it BUT i can not save the changes i have made, what to do to save this file??

you need to sudo the editor when changing this file.

in a terminal

sudo gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libgphoto2.rules

change, save and close.
