Thinkpad-acpi & bluetooth

Post by brooske »

Hi there,

I switched to Mint from Gentoo since a while, and so far it's really great!
One thing actually that doesn't want to work: the built in bluetooth on my thinkpad Z61m.

I found some reports about a bug with bluetooth in thinkpad-acpi module, but can't find a solution for Linux Mint.

If bluetooth isn't possible at this moment I can also use my cell (HTC smartphone) as USB modem, but I really don't know how to do that.

So my 2 questions:
1. How can I make bluetooth work in Linux Mint for my Thinkpad Z61m
2. If not, how can I use my smartphone as an USB modem ? (for this I'm a total newbie, so I'll need some directions ;-) )

If I plug in my smartphone in USB, the network icon in the system tray reports a new rndis wired network device. If I select that it tries to acquire a network address but fails. Is that the way to go when using USB ?

Some logging that's relevant:

Code: Select all

kern.log (hci):
Oct 11 21:21:08 herpes kernel: [ 1600.739809] Bluetooth: HCI USB driver ver 2.9
Oct 11 21:21:08 herpes kernel: [ 1600.739849] usbcore: registered new interface driver hci_usb

also kern.log (thinkpad-acpi):
Oct 11 21:22:08 herpes kernel: [ 1659.700636] thinkpad_acpi: ibm_init: probing for bluetooth
Oct 11 21:22:08 herpes kernel: [ 1659.700649] thinkpad_acpi: drv_acpi_handle_init: Found ACPI handle HKEY for hkey
Oct 11 21:22:08 herpes kernel: [ 1659.704793] thinkpad_acpi: bluetooth_init: bluetooth hardware not installed

(bluetooth is activated in the BIOS, and BIOS is latest version)

Here's a post about cellphones as modem, both via USB and Bluetooth

I haven't had the time to dig deep about the bluetooth, but at least I've found that there is a switch on some Thinkpads for Bluetooth

Thanks for the link. seems no big help for USB, but I'll take a look into it tomorrow

About the bluetooth switch on my thinkpad: it's activated I guess.
In gentoo I had the led for wifi and the led for BT working. Both leds are dead in Mint, but wifi is working, so I expect BT also ?
I toggled the BT switch (fn f5) some times to make sure the USB-dev came up, but it didn't do anything

I found info about a problem in thinkpad-acpi and found some patches, but I don't know how to patch/compile a kernel in a system like mint.
I don't want to break things by not following the normal ways :-)
