[SOLVED] Thinkpad W510 Brightness Control Not Working

Post by blksith0 »

Hello,
I am on Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon, and when pressing the brightness hotkeys on my Thinkpad laptop, the brightness animation slider does show up, and the "brightness" file value is changed located in /sys/class/backlight/____/", however the brightness does not change as I press the hotkeys.
However, if I close the laptop / suspend it, then when I re-open it, the brightness value is changed correctly.

-I have tried a few solutions, the popular one involving changing my grub file to include this "acpi_backlight=vendor" command. The only thing that that seems to change is the name of the folder (the red blank above) from "acpi_video0" to "thinkpad_screen". The contents of these folders are the same, the brightness file is adjusted correctly, but brightness is still not updated.
-Next is to try xbacklight, that did nothing that I could discern.
-Then there's editing a xorg.conf file, however I could not find that file where the guides told me.

So now what would you folks recommend?

I would like to try this fix but have no xorg.conf to edit. Can someone supply a basic xorg.template with a laptop-screen entry to edit? I don't really know how that file works.

Had to create xorg.conf using "sudo nvidia-xconfig"
