Driver nvidia, in use but not work

Post by Wonder »

Hi.
I use LM17, I install a nvidia driver by Driver Manager.

Well, now, and I don't what why, not work the driver of nvidia.

In Driver Manager appears enabled and in use but not work, is not loaded, and work with nouveau.

This problem success since upgrade the kernel, but I uninstall nvidia driver, enabled nouveau, return to previous kernel, install/enabled the recomended nvidia driver (331), restart computer, and I have the same, appears in use but not work.

If I open nvidia-settings appears only two phrases.

I uninstall nvidia driver, enabled nouveau, restart computer with original kernel of LM (3.13.xx), with this kernel, enabled the nvidia driver 331 (all this in Driver Manager) restart computer, also the same, appears in use but not works, nvidia settings only two phrases, can't save a xorg.conf.

I search information about this, I don't view, took two days with headache, no longer occurs to me to think or do more.

Regards.

Edit: For info, IOMMU disabled in Bios, but in grub with this: iommu=soft

Thanks for your reply.

This problem I have since 2 days ago, since I change my motherboard and was have problem with IOMMU but this now is solved.

Since this moment, driver nvidia not works.

I made all but appears in use and not work...

I think that, I download directly from Nvidia and test, but the Driver Manager I think that, is easy to use, for this reason I use always Driver Manager.

I wait that, some user, can help me.

Regards!!!

Edit: When enabled nvidia driver of Driver Manager, is nouveau add to blacklist? I question this because, I view that, nouveau not is in blacklist.

Edit 2: In this moment, I test nvidia 301 from Driver Manager (in kernel 3.17.x) and not works....

lets start from the beginning.
could you list the output of the following terminal commands.

Code: Select all

lspci
lsmod
That will tell us which nvidia card it is and what modules are being used by the driver.
then we can give advise as to how to fix the problem.

Hello.
Thanks for your reply and help.

Well, I enabled a propietary driver of nvidia, version 331 updates from Driver Manager.

In this moment I work with kernel 3.17.4 (if you want I can use other kernel version).

O know that not works the nvidia drivers because, nvidia-settings appears only 2 phrases and when load LM not appears (Linux Mint 17...) when nvidia driver is in use appears this and not appears logo.

This is the info in terminal console:

Hi Richy.
This instructions are for install a nvidia driver of nvidia downloaded driver.

I can install using this steps, but my problem is when install/enable nvidia driver from Driver Manager.
Also I need add nouveau driver to blacklist?

Thanks!

Doesn't matter how you installed the nvidia driver , the Driver Manager works great . . you stated that it wasn't working, and the nouveau driver was being used . . so if you blacklist the nouveau driver, that will allow the nvidia driver to be used . . . so yes, all you need to do is blacklist the nouveau driver.

Hello,

Not works...

I made this steps:
-Then type this command to create a file named “disable-nouveau.conf”:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/disable-nouveau.conf
This above step not generate any file named "disable-nouveau.conf", I create manually this filed named.
Add these two lines to the opened file:
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

Save the file. In the Terminal type this command:
sudo update-initramfs -u

Reboot.
In this moment, I install the nvidia driver 331 from Driver Manager.

Reboot the system and...all same, not work, the nvidia driver not load and work.

For info:
This step I don't made:
To disable nouveau in the ramdisk, open the Terminal and type:
gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

Look for the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
Change it to : GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash rdblacklist=nouveau"
I don't think if its necessary or not, I think that not because after, in update instructions, this step not appears.

you mentioned that you had installed 331 updates -- you should install just the 331 driver, the updates driver will not work with your card.

So go back and uninstall 331 updates and install 331 only.
the go to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and make sure Nividia module is not blacklisted.
while there you may want to add nouveau to the bottom of the list save the file and reboot.
should work then.

Note you'll have to be use root privileges to change the blacklist.conf file.
It should not be necessary to blacklist nouveau thought as it should be removed when you install nvidia 331.

Nvidia's web pages say they have a newer driver out for your card also but that would mean manually installing it.
good luck :)

Hello.
Now I have a other/big problem...

I try to install nvidia driver from nvidia website, last driver, 343.
I have a problem during installation and I try to uninstall.

Well, one step of uninstall question to me if I want restore configuration of xserver, I click in yes (fatal error), and appears a error.

Since this moment, I can't access to LM, after login (I have configure for access automatic, I don't need type user and password) appears a message like this:
Your session has lasted less than 10 seconds... (I don't remember the rest) and I can't access.

I search for google, appears diferents solutions but any works.

Really, I'm desperate, I can't format and fresh install, I have very programs and I can't made fresh install...

If it is, I stay with my previous driver...

Ok Lets do it this way then,

Boot to recovery mode.
This will bring you to a screen that has several options -- click down to the network one and activate the networking.
It will automatically connect your machine.
when that if finished.
click down to root
(enter your password)
this will bring you to a command line terminal.
enter the following commnads:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get purge nvidia
apt-get install nvidia-331
When that has finished enter the following command:

Code: Select all

shutdown -r now
the machine will reboot.
you should now be able to get to your desktop.
see if it wall works.

kc1di,

Like other thread, when I post my last reply I don't was your reply.

Well, all problems are solved thanks at you! :)

My problem that I can't access to LM, I was made that I indicate in my last reply because I don't view your last reply, since this moment I can't access because appears a error I indicate in my last reply
"No Read Access to $HOME directory".
This issue I can solved with:
chmod -r 770

After this, I can access.

In this moment, I access like you indicate:
Boot in recovery mode.
Click in network to automatically connect my machine
When finished, click down to root and enter my password.
And enter the following commands:

Code: Select all

apt-get update
apt-get purge nvidia
apt-get install nvidia-331
And all ok :)

Y try to uninstall (by Device Manager), reboot and try to install by Device Manager and after, not works, install with Device Manager not works, appears in use but not works.
I uninstall again, and then, I go to recovery mode and install with your commands, and all ok, works fine :)

Sorry for my english, sincery, thank you very much!

I continue with the tests (I like test and work with s.o. :))
I uninstall 331 driver, I download a version 340 of nvidia website, I try to install but not install, in the process appears a error and not install.
It's possible for my kernel version (3.16.6)?

Glad you got 331 working :)
as for 340 -- how are you trying to install it. you have to shut down the xserver and do a manual install from the root terminal. with no x running.
Good luck.

Also believe you'll need to install the linux kernel development files. first. make sure the correct linux-headers file is installed for your kernel version.

Yes, I'm very happy :) :)
as for 340 -- how are you trying to install it. you have to shut down the xserver and do a manual install from the root terminal. with no x running.
Good luck.
First, uninstall 331.
Then, add nouveau to blacklist.
Then, reboot, ALT+CTRL+F1 and then, sudo service stop mdm
sudo sh nvidia340.run
In one step produce error, I can view in log some about kernel (I don't remember)
And then, sudo service start mdm
Also believe you'll need to install the linux kernel development files. first. make sure the correct linux-headers file is installed for your kernel version.
Yes, I have installed linux-headers3.16.6 and linux-headers-generic 3.16.6 and and linux-image 3.16.6.
Question, linux kernel development files are linux-headers?

Again, thank you very much!

Edit: I continue think in, the problem its possible for my verion kernel (3.16.6), you that opine?

Hello k1cdi.

You have a reasson, if I don't indicate the error...

Detail my steps:
Uninstall nvidia331 by Driver Manager, after access to recovery mode, start network, then root and then purge nvidia.
After, sudo service mdm stop.
After sudo sh nvidia340

In the process of install in the setp Installin DKMS Kernel Module stop and appears the error:

Error: Failed to run /usr/sbin/dkms build -m nvidia -v 340.65 -k 3.16.6-031606-generic:

I don't know very much about this, but I view that the problem is in kernel and/or DKMS.

The file /var/lib/dkms/nvidia/340.65/build/make.log not exist, I don't have t he folder nvidia unider /var/lib/dksm/
And the file /var/log/nvidia-installer.log only have info about the uninstallation.
