Your monitor gets completely out of range and that's why it's garbled
Out of range = the signal from the video card is outside the specs of the monitor
I suppose you have a very old video card too
My recommendation is to get a new monitor, you only have one set of eyes
The only way to fix it that I can think of is to use compatibility mode
I would use vga=769 if necessary (not VGA is not the same as vga)
