Could you give some more details on what exactly you did with the external disk
If you have in in fstab and the folder you tell it to be mounted in exists it should be mounted
There is obviously some significant difference between ALC889 and ALC889a.
The Aspire 6920G is a notebook - right?
Run lspci in a terminal and post the result
