Is my Laptop good for Linux Mint

Postby Areosa Man on Fri Dec 05, 2008 7:05 pm

Hi!
This is my first post here! I have been thinking about making the leap from windows to Linux, quite a awhile ago, but I was always a little bit scared, but now I am decided to do it.
However, I am now certain of the version I want (Mint, of course 8) ), but one big doubt remains...is my laptop good for Linux, I know that the general specs are ok, but some things like wi-fi, video card, card reader slot, etc, I simply don´t know!

PC specs:
HP Pavilion zd8369EA

Pentium 4
2Gb of RAM
100Gb HD
Graphic card: ATI MOBILITY RADEON X600 256MB
Wi-Fi

I am going to do a dual boot, so the transition can be smooth.

Just one more thing, does Mint have any support for windows mobile devices or is something that may apear? It's really important for me, I have tried Mandriva 2009, because they say they can sync with WM devices, but in my opinion, Mint is superior.

So, Linux masters, is it safe to try? :D

While it is impossible to predict the quirks that anyone might experience with any specific hardware, I don't predict any particular problems with the hardware you want to put Mint on.

That model has a Broadcom-based internal wifi card. Broadcom cards generally work fine with linux. The ATI graphics with 256mb RAM looks good, but most ATI Mobility products siphon system ram to do this. Judging from the system specs, the HDD in that laptop is somewhat decrepit. A few bucks at Newegg should get you a zippy 7200rpm internal AND more storage space.

I suggest you take a gander at HP's support site and flash the BIOS upgrade if relevant.

Thanks AK Dave! I guess it's time to make the leap!
I haven't been this excited since when I got my first PC with DOS 5.0!
Back to the learning curve again.

Looks like there may also be a firmware upgrade for your DVD drive.

Wireless works, everything else is fine, but wired is bad? You may need to open a seperate thread under network/wired.

How it usually works: wired overrides wireless (with network manager), so if you have a good wireless connection but plug in a cable then network manager automagically switches it for you. But thats assuming everything is "default" for you. If your Felicia install required a driver (ndiswrapper) or kernel module (native linux) install to make wireless work then you may not be using network manager (esp if you're using ndiswrapper to enable a Win98 driver to make your wifi work).

Yes, seperate thread under network/wired. Thus far my biggest contribution to getting you running has been to google the specs on your laptop from HP's website and point you at some HP firmware downloads. You might need an actual bonafide network geek to get your wired link fixed.
