WebCam not working

Postby elbeto on Tue Dec 16, 2008 11:54 pm

I think this is a legacy problem from Ubuntu because it doesn't work there neither. At least not in version 8.10, before it worked without problems.

I tried all the tricks in the ubuntu forums unsuccesfully.

If you know how to fix it, please let me know.

Thanks

Can you specify the type of wecam you have? plug it in and issue 'lsusb' into the terminal and post that here.

Here is the info you asked:

xxxxx@xxxxx-desktop:~$ lsusb

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

The system recognize the camera but it still not working.

excellent, it is a logitech quickcam!! ok:

Step 1: Install gspca-source

$ sudo aptitude install gspca-source

Step 2: Plug in webcam.

Step 3: Edit /etc/rc.local to make the camera device permissions available to all users on system startup.

$ sudo gedit /etc/rc.local

The line just before "exit 0", put in:

chmod 777 /dev/video0

The last two lines of /etc/rc.local should look like this:

chmod 777 /dev/video0
exit 0

Step 4:

To fix the dark display:

$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

add at the end of the file add:

options gspca gamma=6

Step 5:

$ sudo modprobe gspca

Now check to see if the webcam works, with camorama, cheese or skype.

Keplerspeed:

Thank you very much for your help.

Step 5 is giving me an error:

FATAL: Module gspca not found

Do you know what to do about it?

Thanks

Ok, do a reboot, then plug in the webcam. issue "dmesg" to the terminal and post output here. Hopefully the reboot will load the gspca module.

Cheers

Re: WebCam not working

Postby dawgdoc on Mon Oct 12, 2009 11:05 pm

If anyone is still checking on this thread, I too am having web cam problems. My system is outlined in the signature area.

I did not see an app to use the webcam in the menu, so I upgraded Pidgin to 2.6.1. See viewtopic.php?f=90&t=34110#p196936 I have a Yahoo account but Pidgin only supports video in XMPP. I then created a Jabber account, will have to configure it, or at least get some buddies. So still no video.
I installed camorama and receive an error when I start the app. Unable to capture image.
I now installed the gspca-source package, still no joy. libv4l-0 was already installed. I am running the nVidia 180 proprietary drivers.

At this point I searched an found this thread.

My webcam is

Code: Select all
dawgdoc@dawgdoc-laptop ~ $ lsusb

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 046d:08dd Logitech, Inc. QuickCam for Notebooks

Also

Code: Select all
dawgdoc@dawgdoc-laptop ~ $ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
    GL_EXT_direct_state_access, GL_EXT_draw_range_elements, GL_EXT_fog_coord,

I followed the thread guide. And when I came to step 4. I did not have the indicated file, so I created it in the path as shown. There is only the one line in the file.

keplerspeed wrote:Step 4:
To fix the dark display:
$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options
add at the end of the file add:
options gspca gamma=6

Step 5:
$ sudo modprobe gspca

After Step 5 my results are:

Code: Select all
dawgdoc@dawgdoc-laptop ~ $ sudo modprobe gspca
[sudo] password for dawgdoc:
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/options, it will be ignored in a future release.
FATAL: Module gspca not found.

I continued to follow the thread; rebooted, plugged in my webcam, opened a terminal and here is the dmesg (Clipped for what I believe is the relevant portion.)

Code: Select all
dmesg

At this point, on hunch based on the threads I read, I installed Cheese. It worked OTB.
If possible, I would still appreciate help getting Camorama working.
