HDMI audio via laptop

Post by Jaydemir »

Ok, so I have a desktop with an Nvidia card/HDMI port. Once the correct driver is selected, I can change the audio output to HDMI, no issue.

My laptop on the other hand is a different story. It does not pick up any other drivers because it's just a plain old video card in there. It just happens to have an HDMI port. The picture comes in fine, but I can not get audio out of the HDMI, and I can not even find the option to select HDMI audio out.

Is there an added step I need to take? Or is it just a handicap of the laptop's hardware? (which I can accept).

It's an HP Pavilion dm4

C'mon jay--you've been here long enough to know more information will be needed for your laptop.
Please specify the model number and post back the results of terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi- Fxz
Someone will have an answer for you.

I'm having the exact same problem. Don't think it's Distrospecific though, since i've encountered it on all the ones i've tested lately.

No option for HDMI sound, no matter what i do. Have googled like crazy but nothing so far.

Here's my inxi log:

Just going to bump this once considering there's two of us. It just seems laptop specific.

Hi, The same problem.
Fresh and clean install of Cinnamon 17.3 on Dell XPS L702X
Nvidia 555M - nice and smooth FHD video out through HDMI to projector, but no audio. HDMI does not appear on available audio output devices in sound settings.
I'd appreciate any help.

Nothing about HDMI under Nvidia. HDMI out port is controlled by Nvidia card. It starts working for video out after instaling Nvidia proprietary drivers from available Drivers list. Unfortunately it does not work for audio out. That results in nice video on my projector, but audio is playing from laptop speakers instead of projector speaker. Of course projector speaker is more desired as better than laptop speakers.
In system sound settings HDMI does not appear as audio output option. There are only speakers and audio jack out for headphones.
Any ideas how to make audio out through HDMI out port to the projector? Thanks!
