SATA DVD Drive Errors on Felicia x86 & x86_64

Postby HyTeK on Fri Jan 16, 2009 12:40 pm

Not sure which forum to post this under (really need to get a bugzilla ;) )

Anyways, I have a Pioneer DVD-DL SATA burner here at work where I am the SysAdmin. I have tried both arch's of Felicia and both will not boot from the live CD if the sata dvd drive is plugged in at all. Even if I boot from an IDE dvd drive while the SATA drive is in, it will not boot from the live cd's.

Here is the error:
(initramfs) ata5: SRST failed (errno=-16)

I've tried another SATA dvd drive and same thing, they both work fine, and seem to boot up fine on 9.04alpha Ubuntu and Mandriva 2009. I do not believe that the newer kernel breaks this as other distros seem to work.

Anyways, to get Felicia installed I had to unplug the sata dvd drive and plug in an IDE one. I will update this once it's installed and I can plug the sata back in to see what happens post-installation.

Cheers.

Can be a faulty SATA controller....
This doe not make sense to me, rather I don't quite understand, please rephrase

I have tried 2 different SATA DVD Drives, on different SATA Ports, and each one on every port does this same error.

The SATA dvd drives and the SATA controller work fine as I can use them in other distributions without error.

Cheers.

What I find for this error is a bug in libata (the module that handles all sorts of drives) or a hard drive jumper problem and as far back as december 2007 but no solution (apart from checking your jumpers - which of course only refers to IDE)
Do I understand you right when you say that Ubuntu 9.04 alfa can boot?
What about Intrepid?
In this respect there should be no difference between Mint and Ubuntu

Intrepid is what I had installed before trying Felicia, and Intrepid had no problems with the Live CD.

Just keep in mind, that so far this is only during the boot up on the Live CD of Felicia. I have NOT had a chance to test the SATA DVD drive after Felicia was installed. I will be able to test that next week when I get back to work.

Here are my test results with trying to boot from the Live CD of Felicia, both x86 and x86_64.

When I get the (initramfs) ata5: SRST failed (errno=-16), the ata# is the SATA Port Number I have the SATA DVD Drive plugged into. I have tested this with 2 different known working SATA DVD Drives.

1. SATA DVD Drive in ports 2-6, SATA HD in port 1 = Live CD will not boot fails
2. SATA DVD Drive in ports 2-6, IDE DVD Drive Master, SATA HD in port 1 = Live CD will not boot fails
3. IDE DVD Drive Master, SATA HD in port 1 = Live CD boots success

If you need more information, I will not be able to get that until Monday.

Cheers.

I see I have forgotten something important
This could be a faulty CD
Did you check the md5sum and burned as slow as possible?

Yes, I always burn OS/Live CD's at 4x. (or 12x if 4x is not available)

I did the md5 and everything is fine.

Installing it with an IDE DVD Drive worked as I installed it just fine.

Hmm - this is perhaps one more of the mysteries of computers - it beats me and I know a bit about hardware too....

lol. same here.

Let it sit until Monday when I can get to do some more testing. I do not have a sata dvd drive at home to test, only at work.

One of my old electronics instructors had a great quote, "Electronics... is still based off of a theory." ;)

Ok.

Felicia is installed, working fine, no problems whatsoever with an IDE DVD Drive.

I installed a working SATA DVD Drive, and the exact same thing happened. Could not boot into Felicia, and got the same errno as I did with the Live CD.

I will again test Ubuntu 9.04 to see if it boots, but I am pretty sure it did.

Regardless, there are issues with Felicia and SATA DVD Drives. (I'm on a nForce chipset btw, ASUS M2N-E motherboard)

Cheers.

The computer I use now has a SATA DVD rw and nforce4 chip, a KN8 SLI by ABIT - no problem what so ever
The DVD is a SONY NEC Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200S 1.05 Jan22,2008
I think this is a case of hardware that does not quite like each other and so with some bad luck it does not work out - not the first time this happens and not the last
This does not mean that it is garbage, not at all - just does not work together

I'm just curious if it's either the kernel, or the kernel modules that have been selected.

I've compiled 2.6.28 and it does not have this issue, neither does 2.6.25. In fact I've never had this issue until I tried Felicia with 2.6.27 =/

I know all about hardware compatibility lol. I've been a SysAdmin for 15+ years now, and have seen some of the wackiest things ever.

Cheers.

Then you know more than me - I sold computer hardware in my own business for 8 years....
I think you have proven that it is the kernel (or the modules) :) There were issues with the .25 kernel I think and I've also seen a few reports about the .27 kernel while the .28 (which will appear in Jaunty 9.04) seems to be an improvement
This is taken from memory - I may be wrong, would not be the first time :)
