FELICIA & Sony VAIO VGN-AR7 hardware situation!

Postby ateinprogress on Mon Feb 02, 2009 7:58 am

OK, I got Sony VAIO VGN-AR7 and I installed LINUX MINT 6 FELICIA Main Edition as only OS on it, and then I blocked - seems I can't use it pretty much: When I plug headphones nothing happens - it keeps playing sound through the built in speakers, same with the microphone too (it doeasn't also recognizes the microphone and webcam built in). I installed the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (the recommended one) and when I check out it says that the driver is installed, activated and working, the graphic environment appears now better but the videocard itself is still working pretty much as there is none (the computer can't deal well with simple Inkscape graphics and movies), the visual effects and animations are also not apearing smoothly. It also doesn't recognizes some of the built in easy-access buttons and output slots but it's not my biggest pain right now.
My question is is there anything I can do to use my computer's potential on 100% with linux MINT or it's just my computer freak or something? I'm not experienced linux user but I really enjoy and admire linux at all, and I do hope my situation to be fixable!
Thank you in advance for your attention!

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Please tell us about your hardware - run lspci in a terminal and post here (right click to copy)
That the internal speakers aare not turned off when you connect headphones is unfortunately not uncommon but I think it's fixed mostly.
Please be careful when when installing nvidia drivers - there seems to be something wrong with the newest one (not available from the restricted drivers tool or Envy)
OH - you may think I'll know what hardware you have as you have posted which laptop model you have. Unfortunately laptops can have widely varying components and be called the same....

Let's take sound first
You have ICH8 sound and I have found that this solution works mostly for anything ICH8 related
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=17801&p=107982&hilit=ich8+alsa#p107982
Of course you use model="sony" or =auto
Note the link to the major sound thread in Ubuntuforums
For the graphics I think you should try Envy instead
It's like this - if the restricted tool doesn't work well Envy does and the opposite
You have to start Envy from the terminal
envyng -t
We could not fit in the GUI in a one CD ISO
Start with an uninstall - it's very easy - don't let the terminal bother you
They do it slightly different
