printer stops working (usb?)

Postby Papawoob on Tue Feb 03, 2009 11:19 pm

Hi all, I have an hp psc1610 connected by usb cable to my pc. After a day or so of uptime none of the other computers on the network can print to it and neither can I. It has something to do with my usb ports, I think they shut down. The hplip monitor then says "cannot communicate." I can see it with "lsusb" in a terminal when it is communicating but not when it stops. I have tried restarting the usb using "sudo rmmod ehci_hcd' and then "sudo modprobe ehci_hcd." I have also repeated these steps using "ohci" and "uhci" to no avail. The only thing that gets it all working again is to restart the computer. I originally thought it was a power management thing as it would shut down after the monitor went to sleep and I would wake it up. I changed the power settings to "never" and now it lasts for a day or so. I also added "ehci_hcd", "ohci_hcd", and "uhci_hcd" to /etc/modules to ensure they were all being loaded. Could it be a bios setting? A hal problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

This is a tricky one - I really don't have an answer
From your post I figure you do not use hibernate or suspend?
Anything else that behaves odd?
Is it the same in all USB ports?
Any difference if you use or not use the printer?
Much use - little use?
I'm trying to capture something that may affect the USB system

- neither
Anything else that behaves odd?
- if you plug in another usb device (flashdrive, mouse, usb hub, etc) you lose communication with the printer or if you have an usb mouse plugged in then plug in a printer the mouse stops working, etc....
Is it the same in all USB ports?
- yes 2.0 or 1.1
Any difference if you use or not use the printer?
- If you have an usb mouse plugged in and then plug in a usb flashdrive the mouse stops working
Much use - little use?
- heavy use in short bursts then maybe 20 - 24 hours repeat the process

Anything else I can give you please let me know. I googled this problem for several days before posting and am at a complete loss.

Thanks,

am at a complete loss.

So am I....
I know that USB can be strange. I have a USB headset and if I plug that in I loose all sound (!) but don't get sound in the headset
This is a strange behaviour and it goes to show that USB may act strangely
This has to do with the inner workings of the motherboard which is a complicated matter
What I can think of in your case is that some buffer - in hardware or software - is filled up for some reason and you get a buffer overflow
But which one and what to do about it.....
I have to see if I can figure something out and come back to you

Thanks for the help Husse. A restart resets everything to normal but a logout/login does not. We have moved into an area where my knowledge is sorely lacking. :?
