This is a tricky one - I really don't have an answer
From your post I figure you do not use hibernate or suspend?
Anything else that behaves odd?
Is it the same in all USB ports?
Any difference if you use or not use the printer?
Much use - little use?
I'm trying to capture something that may affect the USB system

am at a complete loss.
So am I....
I know that USB can be strange. I have a USB headset and if I plug that in I loose all sound (!) but don't get sound in the headset
This is a strange behaviour and it goes to show that USB may act strangely
This has to do with the inner workings of the motherboard which is a complicated matter
What I can think of in your case is that some buffer - in hardware or software - is filled up for some reason and you get a buffer overflow
But which one and what to do about it.....
I have to see if I can figure something out and come back to you
