Intel sound card issues on Dell XPS 430

Postby bibs on Sat Feb 28, 2009 10:56 am

Ok so I have been talking to a few people in the irc channel and decided to make this an official post (thanks buds).

So the situation is I am a new Mint user (its awesome) and I have no sound. When I play a file in Amarok or JuK, it seems to play and it appears to be chugging away, with included waveform. However unfortunately I get no sound out of my speakers or any headphones I plug in.

I have had some help already and done some googling, and this is what I have tried so far, but none of it works so far and I am looking for any help anyone can provide!:

I could not reinstall alsa from source because it reported missing libraries that I had. (possibly related?)

I have tried alsa-mixer and made sure none of it was low or muted.
I have tried modprobe and saw no success.

cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
cat: /etc/modprobe.d/sound: No such file or directory

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 | grep Codec
Codec: IDT 92HD73D1X5

I have the same problem with the same audio device
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: STAC92xx Digital [STAC92xx Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I'm sure I heard a sound from a taskbar notification when I first installed it, but since then audio files play but no sound comes out of either the speakers or headphones. I've turned all the appropriate channels in kmix all the way up.
thanks.

but when I tried to start pavucontrol i got this error:

Yeah, I could have sworn I heard the intro music for Mint the first time I started it up, and yet nothing now. And I also tried kmix of course. Thanks for the link! I will see if it helps!

I wouldn't bother with the link. You'll just get the same error I did.

With this behavior and the article you pasted, I would think intermittent issues would be the norm. I am going to work on that link and see if I cant find something useful in it.

I'm looking through this now.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=843012
and I don't think I mentioned before that I'm using the kde rc. What are you using bibs?

Now it's working sort of. I tried starting pulseaudio again and for some reason it started working and I had access to the pulseaudio volume controls unlike before. I have no idea what's different this time. Since then I've been fiddling with starting and killing pulseaudio. At first when I killed pulseaudio the audio stopped as expected. But now when I kill pulseaudio the audio still plays. I searched for processes names alsa and there are none so what's playing the audio now? Something is definitely screwy. My computer seems to be acting very inconsistently.
