Computer Freezes, possible video trouble

Postby det4100 on Wed Mar 04, 2009 6:22 pm

I've just installed mint 6 main onto a HP Pavilion a810n. I have no extra effects turned on. The computer periodicly freezes up. Just have mouse movement, no access to keyboard. I end up doing a hard shutdown and rebooting. I suspect a problem with the video chip. It appears to be a SiS chipset. Out put of lspci is as follows.

I looked around and found this reference.

Before attempting this solution and borking the install, I thought I'd ask to make sure I'm on the right track with this. It appears there may be a problem with these on board video chipsets.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Well SIS chipsets are not that good (understatement :))
You are on the right track but these drivers are for Ubuntu 8.04 and since Hardy we have a new X so it might not work - check if there is a solution for Intrepid - that should work and the Hardy could work

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it

Thanks Husse,

I started messing around with it. It sure is unstable, whatever I try. It seems to be events related to scrolling open windows causing the freeze. I think I found the solution though. Newegg .com and a $20 video card. Just a shame it froze, I was just about to convert someone to Mint.
