Linux Mint won't start up solved

Postby adobrakic on Fri Mar 27, 2009 5:10 pm

I'm running a dual-boot of Linux Mint 6 and Windows XP. When I try to boot up LM, it goes into low-graphics mode or whatever and doesn't allow me to boot up the computer. I've went into recovery mode, tried fixing xserver, tried reconfiguring screen options, everything. I have no idea what else I could possibly do to fix it.

Nothing is wrong with my hardware, because I usually log on fine. I also tried dropping to root or whatever in recovery mode, but it kept saying the password doesn't work.

Is there some way to fix this from live-cd?

You have to tell us more facts.
The minimum is exactly which Mint you have - which version and which edition (main or any of the CEs)
We also need to know a bit about all your hardware.
Run " lspci " in a terminal and post here (To copy from a terminal right click)
Some wifi and possibly built in sound can be connected to USB even if they are internal - if you suspect you have one of these run " lsusb " in a terminal.
Also tell us if this is using mint4win or not, quite important

Can you boot into low graphics mode?
You have a very old and low performance (by today standards) graphics card.....
It is however supported by the xserver-xorg-video-savage package
It is possible to see if it's installed in Synaptic
In /etc/X11/xorg.conf you should have a line in Section "Device"
Driver "savage"
You can see and change this from the live CD if necessary

At the time of receiving the error, I cannot boot up into low graphics mode. My screen just goes dark, and then nothings happens.

I know :x
Need to get a job... :p

I just checked in Synaptic, and I have both that package, and another package entitled "xserver-xorg-video-s3virge." I'm going to remove the s3virge package, however, for it seems to be irrelevant to any hardware on my computer.

In /etc/X11/xorg.conf you should have a line in Section "Device"
Driver "savage"

All I have is the following:

Code: Select all
Section "Device"
   Identifier   "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier   "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier   "Default Screen"
   Monitor      "Configured Monitor"
   Device      "Configured Video Device"
     Subsection "Display"
        Depth       16
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Should I change it to:

Code: Select all
Section "Device"
   Identifier   "Configured Video Device"
        Driver "Savage"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier   "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier   "Default Screen"
   Monitor      "Configured Monitor"
   Device      "Configured Video Device"
     Subsection "Display"
        Depth       16
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Okay, I've done it, and everything still seems to be fine.
Now I just gotta cross my finger and hope I don't get the graphics card error again :P

Thanks for the help, Husse
