USB/CD/BATTERY makes my laptop FREEZING

Postby thinkpad761 on Wed Apr 01, 2009 6:32 pm

Hi everybody,

So, I'm under Mint Felicia Gnome 32 bits since now many months. My laptop is a Thinkpad T61.

Since now 2 weeks I have a big problem due to the last updates that I did.

My problem is that when I plug my pen drive, remove my battery or insert a CD I don't know why but my laptop freezes during 5-10 seconds. I can move the pointer but I cannot do anything more.

If someone has a similar problem or can help me to find the source and fix the problem.
Thank you in advance to everybody

PS: I've just installed again Mint a few minutes ago, and before the run of Mint Update, it was working correctly. So I guess my problem is caused by one of these updates.

my laptop freezes during 5-10 seconds

Is that all?
Back to normal after 10 secs?
It's not all that uncommon that you get a short "freeze" or something when you insert something in USB
If that's all that happens I would not worry, but of course keep an eye on so it dos not get worse

Hey thank you for your answer.

So like I said, yes, it is when I plug or unplug "something" from my computer.

It happens to me just now, coz I'm under LM since now more than 3 months but 2 or 3 weeks ago this happened. I think it is due to one of my updates. I usually update my computer each month.

It happens when I plug a pen drive, but also when I insert a CD, or remove my battery.
I guess my kernel has something to do with it.

However I'm not at all an expert, I can be considered as a Newbie, so I need to be driven if there are different solutions.

If anyone can help me it will be great.

PS: Husse, nothing related to the topic, but I'm in Erasmus exchange at this moment and I'm in Sweden man, precisely in Halmstad. That's really a beautiful country. I'm from France and it is unbelievable how it is totally different between Latin and Scandinavian countries. That's great!

Off topic
Yes Halmstad is nice - I lived there in the early seventies and it was the home town of my parents (long dead now) so I've spent time there
Glad you like Sweden

Oh nice. It is a really nice city, good atmosphere and so on. Even the weather is not so bad (right now it is perfect, 2 days ago 17 degrees, unbelievable I guess for Sweden at this time).

End of off topic :D

If anyone has any solution!!

Thanks in advance

I'd say that if all you experience is a 10 second freeze and if the computer is perfectly stable otherwise there is nothing to solve
This is in the borderland between hard- and software and could be extremely difficult to chase down (or not)
Not worth the work
If I misunderstand the situation, please describe it again somewhat differently so I get a grip at it

You get it, that's exactly what happens.

However, since yesterday, the problem isn't longer present.
2 possible causes:
-> I noted that Transmission is not open, whereas it was always the case when I had my problem
-> my hard drive where my home partition is present is almost full. Also I noted that sometimes when my disk is 'full' my problem disappears.

I'm still working on it. I will let you know by testing these different cases.
