Postby liquerlover on Sat Apr 04, 2009 1:08 pm

my lappy spec
aspire 4520
geforce 7000m

i installed linux mint 6 in my lappy.since i have slow internet connection, i decide to install nvidia driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.44.pkg1.run) manually which i downloaded from nvidia site. no problem while installing. after installed, i can change my resolution to 1280x800.

how ever, im facing flickering screen when i shutdown, logout, and change user. and if i go to terminal login (ctrl+alt+F1) i cant see anything except flickering screen. while before this, i install the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.44.pkg1.run from the terminal login. but after i install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.44.pkg1.run, i cant use terminal login. can somebody help me to settle this matter?

not forget to mention i cant use mint update because my internet connection were slow while my updates were 2++mb. thank you

What did you install?
-nvidia graphics driver linux IA32 (version 180.44) which i download from nvidia site

When?
-just after i install linux mint in my laptop and i havent done any update

How?
-i installed the driver manually using the terminal login/ text-mode session (ctrl+alt+F1) when login into GDM. using the "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.44-pkg1.run" command and not from the "hardware driver" in mint. then, i was asked whether nvidia should download a new kernel for me, i choose no because at that time i was not connected to internet. even if i connected, my connection were really slow.

My problem
-before installed graphics driver: everything goes fine when i shutdown, logout, switch user or using the terminal login. no flickering black screen.
-after installed graphics driver: whenever i shutdown, logout, switch user or using the terminal login/ text-mode session, i wil get flickering black screen and i cant do anything.

hope this can make it clean & clear. thank you

i was asked whether nvidia should download a new kernel for me

I don't recognise that....
Can be a bit of a problem as Mint uses the customised Ubuntu kernel - not a vanilla kernel
New kernel headers may be downloaded and perhaps it was this you saw
If you normally have decent internet I would recommend to use Envy to help you
First uninstall the present driver then install again - Envy does a good job
From a terminal envyng -t in main
In the other editions you may find it in the menu
One thing comes to mind - test this first
You may have a completely wrong resolution not logged in
One possible solution
viewtopic.php?f=90&t=15102&p=94811&hilit=login+window#p94811
You may also have to change in grub - careful, copy the file first (Ctrl+A and Ctrl+C :))
Code: Select all
gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

On the line with the kernel add " vga=791 " just before quiet splash
This will give you 1024x768 with 65,536 colours

thanks..it work for me. now i can use text mode session and have a clean shutdown. i face this problem since ubuntu 8.10, Fedora 10, and mint 6. it seems that something not right with nvidia & linux kernel.

however, my resolution change when i boot into mint. but after the loading bar full, i will get my normal resolution. i know this is due to the additional command that you ask me to add in my grub. is there anything i can do to get my normal resolution for my boot screen. just asking. there's something inside me make me really like linux even though i faced a lot of problem. :D

about envy, im not too sure about this since im facing this in 3 distro (ubuntu 8.10, Fedora 10, and mint 6), i'll try to use envy i have a chance but for now i think this is enough for me. thank you

You notice something happen because the graphics mode changes
For your resolution in grub - take a pick in the list
Screen 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
Colors --------------------------- -------------------------------------------
256 | 769 771 773 775 796
32,768 | 784 787 790 793 797
65,536 | 785 788 791 794 798
16.8M | 786 789 792 795 799

The table is not nice - unfortunately phpBB does this, nothing to do about it

Yo...problem solved. thanks to mr. Husse for his quick response. now i have perfect linux mint 6 in my lappy. for me, LM6 much more stable and complete then ubuntu 8.10. espcially the "windows wireless tools" and able to play a lot of windows audio&video file. my solution is just add on the line with the kernel "vga=0x315":

/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic root=/dev/sda8 ro quiet splash vga=0x315

nice boot screen and no more "mr. flicker" solved :D

p/s: the other reason i use mint is strong forum (just like ubuntu). if compare to fedora, mint & ubuntu forum are much helpful. i hope they accept this critic positively since i was banned for no obvious reason by fedora forum admin and no action were made until now. i make a conclusion for this since i hope this post can help other user out there
