Quickcam Messenger plus not working

Postby sailor on Sat Apr 04, 2009 5:28 pm

Hello,

I am trying to use a QuickCam Messenger Plus (ID 046d:08f6), for skype, on a Mint 6 installation.

I found out that I need a module named quickcam, which appears on the output of lsmod. Unfortunately, there is another module of the same name that is not compatible with my web camera (is used for different logitech models). How can I tell if the loaded module is the correct one?

Also, there is no /dev/video* device created. dmesg gives the following output regarding the web camera:

[ 1740.080028] usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
[ 1740.268377] usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 1740.771386] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
[ 1740.826715] quickcam: QuickCam USB camera found (driver version QuickCam USB 0.6.6 $Date: 2006/11/04 08:38:14 $)
[ 1740.826727] quickcam: Kernel:2.6.27-11-generic bus:4 class:FF subclass:FF vendor:046D product:08F6

If I understand correctly, there should be a line in the above output linking the web camera to a /dev/video*.

Can somebody help me, please?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

There can't be two modules with the same name in one version (or whatever you call it :))
Computers have no intelligence - that would lead to a crash
I think this is a kernel problem
Unfortunately most links I find are pretty old
You may want to find out about gspca - my cold is coming back and makes me tired and the links are so darned old that I give up temporarily

Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
