Mint CPU support

Postby Peter Witteveen on Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:01 am

Hi,

I am thinking about getting myself an old mid-range server to use as a test PC or workstation.
These computers are most likely to have Xeon/Opteron CPU's, or maybe even IBM PowerPC.

I guess Linux Mint will run on these CPU's, since it is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. Debian runs on every CPU I can name, even on sparc and other exotic ones. But then you need a special Debian CD for sparc.

When I download a new Mint version, i get to choose between 64 and 32 bit. Does this mean that those versions will work with Xeon/Opteron? (the latest being 64 bit)
I just like to have this confirmed, i don't want to buy something that doesn't run Linux Mint, even if it is cheap.

kind regards,

peter

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Mint runs on 32 or 64 bit x86 CPUs
No other architecture than x86 but I think all of them
Of course I can't for sure tell you how well it'll run on a 4 kernel CPU, but runs well on two kernel ones - but hat is not the type you're after :)

So I shouldn't expect PowerPC te work?

The plan was to obtain an older mid range server, which will at best have a dual core CPU.

Can anyone confirm that Mint works with Xeon/Opteron?

thanks!
