No audio on Acer Aspire One 110

Postby CGN on Thu Apr 09, 2009 12:56 am

good day,

i am a bit new to linux, and completely new to mint. I was having wireless issues but managed to go throw enough forums to resolve that issue, but now i am having issue with audio.

specs Acer Aspire One 110
Linux Mint 6
Kernal Linux 2.6.27-7
GNOME 2.22.1

everything was working fine until i ran updates. now if this were windows i would reverse the updates and anything else that was done but with MINT im not to sure how to do that. I cannot get sound to work on either my speakers or head phones. If i crank the audio i can hear static when something plays but nothing else. I have already trid the different settings in audio preferences but no luck there.

can anyone provide any suggestions?

thanks

Hi man. I've got the same type computer but I've never had any problems with audio on it. I do however might have a few good sources of info for you that might do the trick. For some reason these pages were not the first to show up on Google and such but they are a great source of info for us people running Ubuntu/Mint on the Aspire One.

Check out these two pages, especially under the respective Audio-subsection.

Hope this will at least provide some help.

thanks buddy,

i'll take a look and get back to you. yeah if i put in the liveusb i created for mint6 i have audio but on the full install it kills the audio. I know its not hardware for one because it works in a different environment, two both speakers and headphones are down, which are two separate hardware componets.

If you're open to trying new things, you could consider switching to OSS4 instead of sticking with ALSA (as I did to fix the sound on my Acer Aspire notebook)..

If you want to take the plunge, this tutorial will show you how: http://www.opensound.com/wiki/index.php ... rom_source

i WILL TRY :)

whats the worst that can happen. i do a 10 minute re-install... no big.

But the issue seems to happen after updates is it really that important to run updates on a linux distro compared to windows? With windows its mostly security.

It depends on your system.. sometimes updates can fix a problem (for example, I had a graphical problem that was fixed by a package update). Other times, however, an update can break a system that was working flawlessly before! It's really up to you whether or not to install the updates. If everything is working for you, I don't think it would be that harmful for you to skip updates that don't seem that important.

I got audio working on my Acer finally....after three weeks of searching.

You'll never guess how. I downloaded the Linux drivers for the Realtek audio card straight from Realtek's website. I got the model number for the audio card from Acer's driver download page and downloaded the Linux driver directly from Realtek.

AC97 driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
High Definition Audio driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
RT81XX series driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=6&PFid=6&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#RTL8100B(L)/RTL8100C(L)/RTL8101L/RTL8139C(L)/RTL8139C(L)+/RTL8139D(L)/RTL8100(L)/RTL8130/RTL8139B(L)

Unfortunately, I don't remember which one it is for the Acer One...I'm thinking AC97, but I'd check Acer's webpage first (if it ever comes back online)
