If you're open to trying new things, you could consider switching to OSS4 instead of sticking with ALSA (as I did to fix the sound on my Acer Aspire notebook)..

If you want to take the plunge, this tutorial will show you how: http://www.opensound.com/wiki/index.php ... rom_source

It depends on your system.. sometimes updates can fix a problem (for example, I had a graphical problem that was fixed by a package update). Other times, however, an update can break a system that was working flawlessly before! It's really up to you whether or not to install the updates. If everything is working for you, I don't think it would be that harmful for you to skip updates that don't seem that important.

I got audio working on my Acer finally....after three weeks of searching.

You'll never guess how. I downloaded the Linux drivers for the Realtek audio card straight from Realtek's website. I got the model number for the audio card from Acer's driver download page and downloaded the Linux driver directly from Realtek.

AC97 driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... Down=false
High Definition Audio driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... Down=false
RT81XX series driver: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... TL8139B(L)

Unfortunately, I don't remember which one it is for the Acer One...I'm thinking AC97, but I'd check Acer's webpage first (if it ever comes back online)
