Mint freezes on Compaq Presario A900 Laptop

Postby darcjrt on Sat Apr 11, 2009 3:29 pm

I am new to lunix Mint, but not new to linux. I've been trying to install Fedora core 10, OpenSuse 11.1, Kubuntu 8.10 and now Mint 6 in my compaq Presario A900.

The laptop has 2.5GB RAM, Integrated Intel graphics, Intel sound (based on linux) Conexant Sound (based on Windows) and a Atheros wifi.
Every distro installed without problems. The main issue is that randomly, linux freezes while doing anything. Mostly while changing windows using Alt+Tab with some compiz effect. BTW compiz works awesome on Mint on this laptop.
I dont think is a hardware issue because the laptop works fine on Vista Ultimate and XP. I do want to keep Mint as is the distro I liked the most.

Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks

EDIT: CTRL+ALT+backspace wont work or ALT+F1 as everything freezes except the mouse. The only alternative is to do a hard reset.

I am sorry but it is very hard to say anything about random freezes
Check the logs after it happens - System logs in the menu

gdmgreeter is the login screen and I don't think it should be active - did you just try to log in?
That and a networking problem seems to be all, but I see
vmnetBridge
and this means you are using VMware
Is Mint host or guest?
This changes the scene considerably

I wasnt loggin in. I think it past like 5 mins after login in. Yes I have VMware workstation installed for Win XP. I wasnt running vmware at the moment of the crash. The wireless card is an Atheros but at the moment I was connected via ethernet.

Hard to say what's going on, but it seems that maybe apps that should not be started are running and that can be a problem
But this is among the most difficult to answer

Thanks for your quick response. I will take a look at that and maybe uninstall vmware just to see if it makes any difference.
Thanks again
