Laptop backlight doesn't stay off

Postby Sokkratez on Sun Apr 12, 2009 4:33 am

Hi, I hope this is the appropriate forum. This is a hardware issue but I'm betting the solution will end up being a software one ;)

I have a Dell Insprion 600m laptop. I dual boot Linux Mint and Windows XP. My backlight stays off fine while the lid's closed with XP, but it comes back on randomly with Linux Mint (and most other distros I've tried, actually). So unfortunately I don't get to use Mint as much as I'd like to. I have suspend/sleep/hibernation disabled. I have screensavers disabled. In Power Management, I have "Blank Screen" checked under Actions for when the lid is closed. I have dim disabled and I have display sleep set to "never".

I found a couple threads on Google but no real solutions. I'm hoping somebody here could offer some insight.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Did you shut down properly first or did you just close the lid?

Oh, no. I'm not shutting down. I'm just closing the lid. The backlight goes off at first, most of the time, but then it comes back on.

One thing I did find on a forum is this command which I added to a shortcut: "xset dpms force off". It does force my backlight off, but I have to do it manually before I close the lid. If I could somehow add this to some script that executes whenever I close my lid, that would be aces. But I don't know anything about that stuff.

I could help you with a script - but I don't know how to trigger it - i.e. what happens when the lid is closed

I wonder if it could be tied to a screensaver? Will those come on while the lid's closed? Wouldn't be immediate, but still better than doing it manually, I think.
