I find this works for me...
Install lxrandr (using Mintinstall or Synaptic Package Manager, both found in Administration category)
then open Terminal (Accessories) type lxrandr and a new window will pop up. If you have another monitor (or projector) it will be listed and give you choices to select to get it operational.
You may need to run lxrandr when you disconnect the monitor, to return your laptop to its resolution.
