Hello there!

I will be purchasing a new video card for my current Mint 6 Felicia installation an Nvidia.
\My question is this:

The current card is an old Ati card, with my Mint 6 Felicia set up and installed.
What is the proper process when doing the below to minimize Xorg.conf problems with monitor and video.
I really really don't want to have to do a re-install, even though I have the current setup backed up.

I will be doing the following

1. Removeing old Ati card from Mint 6 Felicia currently running on this box.
2. Insalling new NVedia card on this box.
3. Booting up box which new Nvida card.

Any suggestions?

If you have a proprietary driver uninstall it
Got to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in
Section "Device"
add or change to
Driver "vesa"
This way you'll see something when you boot up the new card
Go on and switch cards - be careful to avoid static electricity
Install the nvidia proprietary drivers - I recommend envy (envyng -t)

Fortunetly I did not have to edit xorg.conf for proprietary drivers.
The card I was replacing was an older model ATI rage which didn't have support drivers available.
Insallation was a breeze.
I first of course backed up my current Mint 6 install, this included making backups of xorg.conf before shutting the box down, removing the old card and putting in the new
Nvidia BFG, which I got on sale at staples for under $75, as it was an AGP card.

After putting in the new card I booted up Mint, it defeaulted to unknown type 800x600 resolution.
I downloaded the correct driver using the EnvyENG util, and presto!

Now I have amazing compiz, emarld affects with the my new card which has 512MB on board.
