QuadCore Q8200 with NV GTX 260

Postby thiagoaos on Fri May 15, 2009 9:07 pm

Hi,

I'm new in mint world, but i ubuntu user.
I want to use mint, but before install i have some doubts.

I would like to know if linux mint will run fine in my sistem.

Quadcore Q8200
4GB ram (2x2gb)
NV GTX 260 206sp

What the best solution? Install mint 7 RC 1 (32bit version) or install mint 6 (64bit version) and later upgrade to mint 7 64bits?

Thanks,
Thiago

What works in Ubuntu will certainly work in the corresponding Mint release... i.e. Intrepid - Felicia and Jaunty - Gloria. If all your hardware works on both versions, whether you chose Mint 6 or 7 is up to you. Mint 7 final is not far away... and the 64bit version should follow soon after that.

I don't have ubuntu in this machine, i have ubuntu in my laptoop. So is totaly different machine.

My question is,

Will Mint 32bits run 4gb memory and my video card ( gtx 260 with 896mb ) very fine?
Or do i need a 64bits version?

All 32bit OSs are limited to using 3.2 GB of RAM. If you want to use the full 4GB of RAM you will have to go with 64 bit. As for the Nvidia cards... do some googling to see other users' experience with the hardware. That would be a more reliable source of info.

Why do i need to google if i'm ask about nv gtx 260 in Mint Linux Forum? I just need to know if have drives to this video card.

If other user experience in other linux distro works, in mint will work too?

Can i install mint 7 RC 1 32bits and later change to mint 7 64bits (when this realease out) keeping my sfatfs?

If now i will install mint 6 64 bits, and wait for mint 7 64.

Huh? So do you want want me to google it for you? Maybe I can come over to your home and read my findings out to you as well... Or do you expect someone to acquire the hardware and test it out for you? All help offered here is voluntary... no one owes anyone anything. At least you could have searched.

No worries... just that a quick search can avoid waiting for an answer... I did answer where I knew... and only suggested a way to get an answer for the other part. Anyway, no hard feelings.

Usually, if something works in another distro it will work in Mint... maybe some extra work will be needed... but Ubuntu has very good hardware compatibility. If something works in Ubuntu, it is almost certain that it will work in Mint... because Mint is based on Ubuntu.

If you install the 32 bit version and want to change to the 64bit version, you will have to do a full reinstallation. Everything in your root (/) partition will be lost. Data in other partitions will be preserved... unless you format them :P

I would recommend installing the Mint 6 64bit version because it is stable... There are still some issues with the Mint 7 RC. This will avoid any problems you might have. Then, when Mint 7 64 bit is released, you can upgrade to that. But like I said, it is up to you.

As for your graphics card under 64 bit, either search for other users' experience with it in Ubuntu or Mint... or wait for someone who knows to answer.

Just remember, Google is your friend... most problems have been faced before... and a quick search will usually get you an answer.

Cheers.
